Comprehensive Airalo eSIM Guidance for UK Travellers

eSIM Activation Guide

eSIM activation guide illustration

Activating an Airalo eSIM involves several distinct steps, each of which must be completed correctly to ensure a smooth experience. Our activation guide covers the process in full detail, with platform-specific instructions for both iOS (iPhone) and Android devices.

Before beginning the activation process, you must confirm that your device is eSIM-compatible and that your current mobile plan allows eSIM usage (some locked devices from UK operators may restrict this). You should also ensure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection, as the eSIM profile download requires internet access.

Activation Steps Overview
Purchase Your Plan

Select and purchase your Airalo plan via the Airalo app or website. You will receive a QR code and activation instructions by email and within the app.

Access eSIM Settings

On iOS: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. On Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM. The exact path varies by manufacturer and Android version.

Scan the QR Code

Use your device camera to scan the QR code provided by Airalo. Alternatively, enter the activation code manually if QR scanning is unavailable.

Download the Profile

Your device will download the eSIM profile from the carrier's server. This typically takes 30–90 seconds on a good Wi-Fi connection.

Label and Configure

Give your new eSIM a recognisable label (e.g., "Japan Trip"). Configure which SIM handles data, calls, and texts. For Airalo, set the eSIM as your data SIM when abroad.

Configure APN (if required)

Some Airalo plans require manual APN configuration. The correct APN settings are provided in your Airalo account and in our FAQ.

Test Before Travel

If possible, test your eSIM data connection before departing. Note that the plan may not activate until you arrive in the destination country.

Activate on Arrival

Upon landing, switch your data SIM to the Airalo eSIM. Allow a few minutes for the device to register on the local network.

For detailed troubleshooting, see our FAQ page.

Coverage Information

Coverage information illustration

Airalo partners with local mobile network operators in each country to provide data coverage. The quality and speed of coverage depends on the partner network's infrastructure in your specific location. Airalo's coverage maps provide a general overview, but actual performance may vary significantly between urban and rural areas.

In major cities and tourist areas, Airalo eSIM plans typically deliver 4G LTE speeds comparable to local SIM cards. In rural or mountainous areas, coverage may be limited to 3G or even 2G. Some remote destinations may have no coverage at all, even if the country is listed as supported.

Plan Types Explained

Airalo offers three categories of eSIM plans, each suited to different travel scenarios:

Local Plans
Valid in a single country. These plans use the local partner network and typically offer the best value for single-destination trips. Data allowances range from 500 MB to unlimited, with validity periods from 7 to 90 days.
Regional Plans
Valid across a group of countries within a region (e.g., Europe, Asia, Middle East). These plans are ideal for multi-country trips. Coverage quality may vary between countries within the region.
Global Plans
Valid in 100+ countries worldwide. These plans offer maximum flexibility but may provide lower speeds or smaller data allowances compared to local plans for the same price. Best suited for frequent travellers or those visiting multiple regions.

Glossary of Key Terms

eSIM (Embedded SIM)
A digital SIM card built into your device. Unlike a physical SIM, it cannot be removed. eSIM profiles (carrier configurations) can be downloaded and switched digitally. More in FAQ →
eSIM Profile
A digital configuration file that contains the network credentials for a specific carrier. When you purchase an Airalo plan, you receive an eSIM profile that is downloaded to your device. More in FAQ →

Factors for Evaluating an Airalo Plan

Use the following checklist when assessing which Airalo plan is right for your trip:

#FactorQuestions to Ask
1Destination coverageIs my destination country supported? Which network?
2Data allowanceHow much data do I typically use per day?

4Network speedIs 4G LTE available, or only 3G?
5Throttling policyWhat happens when I exceed my allowance?
6Hotspot supportCan I share data with other devices?
7Top-up optionsCan I add more data if I run out?
8Device compatibilityIs my phone eSIM-compatible and unlocked?
9Activation timingWhen does the plan start — on purchase or first use?
10Refund policyCan I get a refund if I don't use it?
11Multi-country travelDo I need a regional or global plan?
12Price per GBHow does this compare to alternatives?

Boundaries and Exclusions

It is important to understand the limitations of Airalo eSIM plans before purchasing. The following exclusions apply to most standard plans:

  1. Airalo plans are data-only. They do not include a phone number, voice calls, or SMS. Use VoIP applications (WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype) for communication.
  2. Plans are non-refundable once the eSIM profile has been installed on your device, regardless of whether data has been used.
  3. eSIM profiles are device-locked. You cannot transfer a profile from one device to another.
  4. Plans cannot be paused or extended. If your trip is extended, you must purchase a new plan.
  5. Coverage is subject to partner network availability. Airalo cannot guarantee connectivity in areas where partner networks have no infrastructure.
  6. Some plans do not support tethering or mobile hotspot. Check the plan details before purchasing if this is a requirement.
  7. Airalo is not responsible for data usage by third-party apps running in the background. Monitor your usage via the Airalo app.
  8. Plans activated in the wrong country (e.g., a Japan plan activated in the UK) may not function as expected. Activate only upon arrival in the destination country.

Complaints and Escalation

If you experience issues with your Airalo eSIM plan, the following escalation path is recommended:

  1. In-app support: Open the Airalo app, navigate to your plan, and use the live chat feature. Response times are typically within 1–4 hours.
  2. Email support: Contact Airalo at [email protected] with your order number, device model, and a description of the issue.
  3. What to include: Order confirmation number, device make and model, iOS/Android version, screenshots of error messages, and a description of steps already taken.
  4. Expected resolution time: Most technical issues are resolved within 24–48 hours. Billing disputes may take up to 7 business days.
  5. Escalation: If your issue is not resolved, request escalation to Airalo's senior support team via the same email channel.
